Lacklustre Watson out of US Open after thrashing at hands of Cirstea
BRITISH No1 Heather Watson set her sights on consolatory doubles success after being dumped out of the US Open singles draw in the first round by Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
Watson lasted just 54 minutes and won just 12 per cent of points on her second serve as she lost 6-1, 6-1 to Cirstea, who at No80 is 35 places below the Channel Islander in the world rankings.
The 22-year-old arrived in New York in buoyant mood following a season of improvement but admitted that everything had gone wrong and turned her focus to the doubles draw, where she is set to team up with Spain’s Silvia Soler-Espinosa.
“I just wasn’t able to find my game because she didn’t give me much time,” she said. ”It’s another week, so I’ll just look forward to next week now and the doubles. It can’t get much worse, so only moving up from here.”
Fellow Briton Andy Murray meets German Matthias Bachinger on Thursday in his second round match.
Bachinger, who had never won a grand slam match before this week, was a suprise straight-sets victor over Czech Radek Stepanek in round one.
