Labour pushes for a vote over the unpopular raid on charities
LABOUR MPs are pushing for a vote in parliament tomorrow on the government’s planned cap on income tax reliefs, yesterday calling the limits “a sham of a change” which “came completely out of the blue” to hit charities.
Treasury minister David Gauke had earlier defended the plan, explaining it is not fair that “there are some very wealthy individuals where the tax system allows them to essentially opt out of paying income tax,” instead favouring their pet charities.
David Cameron said the changes will only be made next year, giving “plenty of time to get it right, plenty of time to consult and to listen,” in line with the government’s aims of boosting charitable giving.
However, Labour’s Rachel Reeves said “if the government wanted to tackle avoidance they could have worked with the Charity Commission and had a proper consultation with charities and philanthropists.”
