iPad 2 cheaper than the first
APPLE yesterday announced its latest iPad, which will go on sale on Friday, will be cheaper than the original.
The iPad 2 will start at £399 including tax for the 16GB model – £30 cheaper than its predecessor.
The 32GB and 64GB models will cost £479 and £559, with 3G costing an extra £100, although mobile operators may eventually offer subsidised prices.
It will go on sale in 25 countries at 5pm (UK) on Friday, with queues expected outside stores around the world.
Apple boss Steve Jobs said: “While competitors are still struggling to catch up with our first iPad, we’ve changed the game again with iPad 2.
“We’re experiencing amazing demand for iPad 2 in the US – customers can’t wait to get their hands on it. We are working hard to build enough iPads.”
The iPad 2 went on sale on 11 March in the US. Apple has not released initial sales figures. The first iPad, which went on sale a year ago, sold 300,000 units on the first day, and crossed the 1m units mark in 28 days.
Apple has come under pressure from rival tablets powered by Google’s Android operating system. However, most analysts doubt they will make a serious dent in iPad2 sales this year, with some predicting an oversupply of non-Apple devices.
