Hughes: Kick It Out won’t work
QPR manager Mark Hughes last night insisted that the Kick It Out campaign is unlikely to ever entirely eradicate racism from football and believes there will always be a minority with which it will continue.
Before yesterday’s 1-1 Premier League draw at home to Everton, Anton Ferdinand – who was last season at the centre of a race row with Chelsea captain John Terry – and team-mates Junior Hoilett and Shaun Wright-Phillips chose not to wear t-shirts in support of the Kick It Out anti-racism campaign, a decision Hughes felt was theirs to make.
“It’s a personal thing,” Hughes explained. “My personal belief is that any campaign that focuses on trying to take racism out of sport and football is a good thing, and we should try and support it.
“Everyone will have a view on whether or not enough is being done, someone will take the personal view that not enough is being done, but you’ll never get rid of it totally.
“I think it’s very, very difficult. You’ll always get some idiot that feels it’s something he wants to do.”
