HSBC names Boyles as new European boss
HSBC has appointed Peter Boyles to a new role as chief executive for continental Europe, where the traditionally Asia-focused institution said it saw “considerable opportunity”.
Boyles, the head of the bank’s French operations and a 35-year veteran of HSBC, will lead a new Paris-based team responsible for businesses in 26 countries across continental Europe, including France, Germany, Turkey and the central and eastern European states. He will report to Stuart Gulliver, chairman of Europe and Middle East and global head of investment banking.
HSBC has a long history in Asia and has said it would direct expansion at emerging markets, but Gulliver said the bank saw openings closer to home, including by connecting customers across developed and emerging markets.
Tony Mahoney was named deputy chief executive for Continental Europe and Christophe de Backer will succeed Boyles as chief executive in France, the bank said.
Boyles joined HSBC in 1975 and has worked in a variety of posts, including in the Middle East, Hong Kong and Malaysia. He has been in France since 2000, becoming country chief executive in September 2007.
