Home Retail and TfL take Argos underground at Cannon Street Tube station
Commuters will now be able to pick up everything from laptops and televisions to furniture as they hop on the Tube after Argos launched its first Underground store yesterday.
The retailer’s parent company Home Retail Group has signed a partnership with Transport for London to open a store “the size of a large family kitchen” at Cannon Street Tube station.
The shop, which has a sales floor of 170 square feet and measures 650 sq ft overall, will offer 20,000 products, which shoppers can buy in advance online to collect in store.
It will be open from 7.30am to 7pm Monday to Friday and between 9am and 6pm on Saturdays, and will have stock delivered from a larger store in the area twice daily under its “hub and spoke model”.
The new store is one of several new digital store formats Argos is trialling across the UK to differentiate itself from its rivals and keep up with changing consumer shopping behaviour.
It joins other retailers, including Asda, looking to win over customers on their commute to work. TfL is also benefiting from the trend and aims to generate £3.4bn over the next 10 years by revamping its estate.
