Home Office threatens to name and shame 17,000 companies not complying with modern slavery laws
The Home Office has today promised to name and shame businesses which do not live up to its rules to combat modern slavery.
Civil servants will be writing to 17,000 chief executives, calling on them to publish annual transparency statements on their supply chains.
Under current regulations, businesses turning over more than £36m have to produce documents showing what they are doing to stamp out exploitative practices among their suppliers.
But Home Office figures show only around 60 per cent of companies have published the relevant information, and some of those released failed to meet the requirements of the law.
Victoria Atkins, the crime, safeguarding and vulnerability minister, said: “Some businesses are taking their responsibilities seriously… but there are others who are simply not meeting their basic legal obligations.
“That’s why the Home Office is sending letters to businesses today with a clear message that continued non-compliance will not be tolerated.”
