Here’s why Edinburgh is the perfect place to launch a gin brand
Fancy a tipple with a twist?
With the growth of fashionable speak-easy style gin bars, Edinburgh has witnessed a renaissance of gin distilling within the city. Premium brands such as Pickering’s Gin and Edinburgh Gin have been at the heart of a global explosion in Scottish gin sales, with the latter recently opening a new distillery in Leith that boosted annual production capacity from 27,000 to 80,000 cases.
Underlining its increasing appeal and broader product range, Scotland’s fastest growing gin brand, Edinburgh Gin, recently toasted four prestigious awards at the 2016 International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC).
Alex Nichol, co-founder, Edinburgh Gin:
Provenance remains a differentiator – where the product comes from, who made it, and what goes into it are all crucial ingredients in driving sales.
Another local success story has been Daffy's Gin, named London Dry Gin of the Year at last year’s ISWC. Daffy's Gin is served in some of the best bars in London, Edinburgh and New York, garnering praise from across the industry.
Earlier this year, Daffy’s secured a deal with Waitrose that has seen its premium small batch gin stocked in 234 stores UK-wide.
Summerhall Distillery, Edinburgh’s first exclusive gin distillery in over 150 years, has partnered with The Royal Yacht Britannia to create Britannia Gin- an exclusive gin especially for the ship.
With discerning consumers increasingly drawn to quality and provenance, Edinburgh’s distilling industry is combining tradition and authenticity with modern, sophisticated production techniques, branding and distribution channels, squarely positioning the city within the global alcoholic beverages market.
