Hammond to announce special 50p coin to commemorate Brexit
The Chancellor Philip Hammond is expected to announce a commemorative 50p coin to mark Brexit later today.
The coin will be available from 29 March – the day Britain leaves the EU – and will have the phrase “Friendship with all nations” written on one side with the Queen's head on the other.
Hammond is expected to make the announcement in his Budget speech later on Monday.
A special 50p was made when the UK joined the European Economic Community in 1973 and another one in 1998 to mark 25 years in the EU.
The newspaper quoted a source to the Chancellor as saying “it's an historic moment, which will rightly be commemorated.”
It also said that the Treasury had been working on plans for the coin for months, before Conservative MPs began lobbying for one in the summer.
