Greek crisis: Greek unemployment remains above 25pc as debt crisis escalates
Unemployment in Greece remains over 25 per cent, as new figures show the country’s debt crisis continues takes its toll on its citizens.
Figures published by Greece’s National Statistics Service this morning show unemployment at 25.6 per cent in April, down slightly from 25.8 per cent the month before.
Young people are particularly affected by the crisis as more than half of Greece’s 15-24 year olds are jobless. Youth unemployment currently stands at 53.2 per cent, although this is down compared to 59.6 per cent unemployment in April 2013.
Although the latest figures do show unemployment down slightly, it remains to be seen how much the turmoil of the past weeks will affect unemployment in the country, as banks have been shut since the last bailout deal expired at the end of June.
After the public’s resounding “no” vote to further austerity in Sunday’s referendum, Alexis Tsipras has promised to present new reform plans to creditors later today.
