Grant slams Pompey chief for breaking promises
PORTSMOUTH boss Avram Grant has slammed the club for the broken promises which have left them walking a Premier League tightrope.
The Israeli claims he was told he would be in the position to add four new faces to his struggling Pompey side in the January window, but instead saw two of his best players sold in order to balance the books and pay the monthly wage bill.
Former Chelsea boss Grant claims the sales of Younes Kaboul and Asmir Begovic, to Tottenham and Stoke respectively, were conducted behind his back and now faces an uphill fight to keep the club in the top-flight.
“I’m very, very disappointed with the situation off the pitch and I’m very disappointed that people cannot do what they promised me,” said Grant. “When I came to the team, I knew the situation was not good with the football side, but they promised me everything was good with the financial side and that we would bring four players more.
“We’ve had injuries and instead of bringing in two players, we sold two. I’m very disappointed.”
Indeed, the club’s situation slumped to new depths yesterday when the Premier League announced they will hold on to more than £2m from the club’s player sales in January to cover money owed to Chelsea and Watford for the purchases of Glen Johnson and Tommy Smith.
