Government urges energy companies to freeze prices until 2015
The coalition has called on the big six energy companies to freeze their prices until 2015. According to Sky news sources, energy secretary Ed Davey has written to the country's six largest energy companies asking them to freeze their prices until the general election.
Should there be no dramatic rise in the wholesale price of energy, tariffs would be held steady for the next 18 months. The appeal comes as part of a series of measures being proposed by the government to tackle the cost of energy, including cutting bills by £50 by reforming green levies.
Industry sources told the BBC that the government wanted to avoid another round of price hikes that could be blamed on the coalition's green policies.
The Labour party has promised to freeze energy prices for 20 months should it be elected, a move the government has denounced as a con.
