Google ups heat on Apple
GOOGLE chief executive Eric Schmidt stole Apple’s thunder yesterday by launching a well-received online content subscription service just a day after its rival unveiled its own.
Google’s One Pass payment model, which will allow publishers to charge for content viewed on computers and mobile devices, was praised as more flexible for users and a better deal for publishers than Apple’s service.
Schmidt said One Pass would allow users to easily switch between devices by giving them a single password with which to access content on PCs, tablets and mobiles.
It will also charge publishers just ten per cent of their price, compared with the 30 per cent levied by Apple.
Both systems are designed to help content publishers recoup revenue from media and information published online, as users are increasingly open to paying for their content.
