Google ordered to destroy data
The UK Information Commission’s Office (ICO) has ordered search engine Google to destroy personal data that was collected from British home wireless networks in 2008. Google last week admitted it had colleced the data from homes and businesses around the world while taking pictures for its Street View product, which has pictures linked to a map. Despite ordering that the files be eradicated, the ICO has said it will take no action against the company. This is turn has sparked protest from the pressure group Privacy International, which claims the ICO’s privacy policy is not tough enough on US companies operating in the UK. The row comes amid mounting pressure on firms such as Google and social networking site Facebook to control the flow of personal data on the web.
