Goldman’s O’Neill linked to Bank job
Goldman Sachs’ Jim O’Neill is said to have been approached by the Treasury as a possible candidate to be the next governor of the Bank of England. It is said that officials from the Treasury made the approach several months ago. A spokesman for the Treasury declined to comment, referring to a statement by chancellor George Osborne last week that the search for a new Bank of England chief would not start in earnest until later in the year. Governor Mervyn King is due to retire in June 2013. O’Neill combines a distinguished pedigree as one of the world’s most famous economists with over a decade of experience at the world’s most powerful investment bank. In his current post as chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, he helps oversee $714.6bn (£439bn) in assets.
