GMB and Ucatt vote for strikes
A day of national strike action came a step closer yesterday when members of the GMB and Ucatt unions voted in favour of striking on 30 November. GMB, which has almost 610,000 members, said its workers voted by four to one in favour of a strike over pensions, on a turnout of 33 per cent. “It is not too late for the government to pull back from this confrontation and scrap this attack on pensions,” said GMB national secretary for public services Brian Strutton. Ucatt, with 120,000 members, said it had voted in favour of strikes by a margin of four to one, on a 27 per cent turnout.
