Automatic
A mechanical watch in which an interior system winds it automatically, removing the need for hand winding.
Bezel
The top part of the watch case, sealing the crystal over the face.
Calibre
The specific type of watch movement.
Chronograph
A watch complication with a stop-watch function.
Complication
Functions in addition to time keeping.
Crown
Circular protrusion on the side of a watch for winding it.
Escapement
Literally what makes a watch tick – the mechanism converting rotating motion to into regulated beats of time.
GMT
Greenwich Mean Time, but also used for watches with a second time zone.
Jewel
Synthetic rubies used to minimise friction in the movement’s rotating gear wheels.
Lug
The parts of the case which connect to the strap or bracelet.
Manual
A handwound watch.
Movement
The engine of the watch – the mechanism driving the motion of the hands and complications.
Power reserve
The duration of the remaining power stored in the clock, indicated by a subdial.
Tourbillon
One of the most prestigious complications, mounting the escapement in a cage to counteract gravity.
