FTSE 100 bosses have old names
FTSE 100 chiefs may be upset to learn that their once commonplace names have had their day. According to the Office for National Statistics, no female FTSE 100 chief exec shares a name with one of the top 10 most popular baby names in the UK. As for the men, none of the top boss names (David, Stephen, Mark, Andrew and Ian) get a look-in. In fact, only David made it into the top 100 at all, coming in 50th place. Ouch.
Happily for some on the power-list, their names still reign supreme. The top spot for most popular boy’s name was Oliver – and medical supplier Smith & Nephew has a boss named Olivier (Bohuon) – well, it’s close enough.
George is number seven on the list; surely a huge relief to Associated British Foods chief George Weston, and indeed the rest of the Weston family, who own chunks of everything from discount retailers Primark to the highest of high end stores Fortnum and Mason.
The Westons have a little tradition; keeping their boys’ initials GW after the empire’s founder (also called George). The family must be relieved, with George being so popular – there’s no need for creativity in the name department quite yet.
