The Team Sky rider finished a close second to stage winner Joaquim Rodriguez and earned enough time bonuses to overtake Tony Martin for the overall lead.
Froome holds a one-second advantage but bigger leads over key rivals: 36 seconds on Alberto Contador, one minute 38 seconds on Vincenzo Nibali and almost two minutes on Nairo Quintana.
“It’s never too early to go into yellow, and I’d much rather be in this position than having to make up time on my rivals,” said Froome, who won the Tour in 2013.
