Free agent Campbell set to spark Christmas rush
SOL CAMPBELL is set to spark a Christmas transfer scramble after finally settling his contract dispute with Notts County last night.
The 35-year-old had been prevented from joining another club after leaving County less than a month into a five-year deal back in September.
But players’ union chief Gordon Taylor has confirmed the League Two club have now agreed to release Campbell’s registration, allowing him to pursue his career.
Campbell, capped 73 times by England, has already spoken of his desire to join Championship leaders Newcastle, but still harbours ambitions of playing in the top-flight and would ideally like to recoup much of his £40,000-a-week wages he was earning at County.
Both the Premier League and Football League confirmed last night that Campbell is eligible to sign immediately but is unlikely to be able to play until the new year.
“Sol Campbell is now a free agent,” Taylor said last night. “His contract dispute has been resolved and he is free to pursue football in the January transfer window. He can sign for any club he wants now.”
Campbell became a token signing for County director of football Sven-Goran Eriksson but soon became disillusioned with life at Meadow Lane, playing just one match before leaving the club by “mutual consent”.
