Frankel ready for Duel on Downs with Canford Cliffs
JOCKEY Tom Queally admits unbeaten Frankel is in for his sternest test yet in today’s eagerly anticipated clash with Canford Cliffs at Glorious Goodwood.
Henry Cecil’s three-year-old has seven wins from seven, including an emphatic 2000 Guineas triumph, and is slight favourite for the Group One Sussex Stakes, which has four runners but has been billed as the Duel on the Downs.
But he is yet to meet opposition like Canford Cliffs, the Richard Hannon-trained four-year-old who saw off the mighty Goldikova at Royal Ascot last month and is going for back-to-back wins in this race.
“Frankel has shown he’s the best three-year-old around and now he has to prove it against older horses, namely Canford Cliffs,” said Queally.
“He hasn’t met a horse of that calibre before so this will tell us where he ranks among all the milers around today.
“A lot has been written and said about tactics, but we have options with Frankel, and in the end I’m sure it will be a case of the best horse winning.”
