Former Spurs star Piennar pays tribute to Meyiwa after tragedy
FORMER Tottenham midfielder Steven Pienaar has expressed his sorrow following the horrific killing of South Africa national team captain Senzo Meyiwa on Sunday evening.
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Meyiwa, who skippered his club side as well as Bafana Bafana, died after being gunned down in the Vosloorus township near Johannesburg as he attempted to protect his girlfriend during a robbery.
The 27-year-old was pronounced dead upon his arrival at hospital, with Piennar paying tribute to his international team-mate.
“First of all, I want to express my sincere sympathy to Senzo’s family and friends at this very sad time,” he said. “To lose your life at a young age when you have so much ahead of you is tragic and difficult to understand.
“Senzo was a very talented goalkeeper who was well liked by team-mates and opponents alike. Our nation has lost a popular sportsman and he will be sadly missed.”
Meyiwa featured for Orlando Pirates on Saturday as his side progressed to the semi-fianls of the South African League Cup.
