Former City banker Warburton sacrificed in Brentford overhaul
BRENTFORD have confirmed plans to part company with their City banker-turned-football manager Mark Warburton at the end of the season despite his success with the Championship club.
The move follows more than a week of intense speculation about the former AIG, Bank of America and RBS currency trader’s position, prompted by reports he was set to be ousted by owner Matthew Benham.
Brentford said Warburton, sporting director Frank McParland and assistant boss David Weir would depart in May because they did not want to work under a revamped Continental structure.
The Bees have suffered successive defeats and slipped to seventh in the Championship but are just one point outside the play-off places with 15 league games remaining.
Warburton landed his first managerial role in December 2013 after a spell as the Bees’ sporting director and instantly guided them to automatic promotion to English football’s second tier. He told City A.M. last month: “Mark Warburton, Premier League manager, and Brentford, Premier League football club, has a lovely ring to it but there is a long way to go.”
