BRUNCH AT HAWKSMOOR
We’ve long known that East End restaurant Hawksmoor was one of the best places to eat meat, and it’s now servring a truly spectacular brunch. From 11am you can get stuck into steak and eggs – choose from seven different steaks, and add half a lobster if you like – sausage and egg “HkMuffin” (nice), fine burgers, or a £30-breakfast (to share) that could stop an elephant in its tracks. It includes mutton sausages, smoked bacon chop, grilled bone marrow, trotter baked beans, dripping toast, and an awful lot more. BINOCULARS BACK TO BLUEPRINT
One of the pleasures of visiting the rather beautifully-appointed Blueprint Café at the Design Museum is that you get a dinky set of binoculars with which to admire the gorgeous view along the Thames. The problem for the owners is that thousands of these half-inched every year by light-fingered patrons. They want them back. Therefore, throughout this month the restaurant is running a binoculars amnesty, in which diners who bring a pair back can be rewarded with a carafe of wine or a complimentary third course. SUMMER MEANS… PINEBERRIES?
Not, as one might expect, an example of the kind of genetic tinkering that recently produced glow-in-the-dark pigs, pineberries are in fact a real, South American fruit that appear to display characteristics of both strawberries and pineapple –?and Waitrose is now stocking ‘em. We’ve had some in the office, and they’re pretty good – smaller than normal strawberries and white with tiny red pips, they’re like a sharper, tangier version of their red sister fruit. We reckon they’d be perfect to liven up a fruit salad.
