FOOD & BOOZE NEWS
THE CIRCUS COMES TO COVENT GARDEN
In the midst of all this frozen gloom, Covent Garden’s newest restaurant and bar – opening tonight – might be just the thing to inject some warmth and colour. Circus, on Endell Street just by Seven Dials, is a Surrealism-inspired slice of funky showmanship from renowned designer Tom Dixon – the lighting looks like a swarm of bubbles fused to the ceiling, the walls are covered in gold/black diamond-pattern wallpaper and mirrored mosaic tiles and there’s an abundance of sleek, retro-minimalist furniture. The pan-American cuisine and cocktails are designed for sharing, and the huge High Table becomes a stage for live acts later on in the evening. 27-29 Endell St, WC2H 9BA. 020 7420 9300 www.circus-london.co.uk.
THE WESTFIELD’S NEW PUB
If you’re heading to the Westfield Shopping Centre to get stuck into the sales, you can stop off at the new gastropub that’s opened within it, The Bull. Launched by Geronimo Inns – the people behind some of London’s best locals – The Bull is promising hearty British scran, locally-brewed draught ales and board games to revitalise weary shoppers.
THE CHAMPAGNE AND SUSHI DETOX
In detox season, sushi is probably the best cuisine for those wanting to eat out in style while watching the calorie intake – and there’s extra style on offer at Kensington’s Koi Sushi and the West End’s Hi Sushi Izakaya, where a special, three-course tasting menu has been designed around Laurent-Perrier’s Ultra Brut, the champagne house’s high-end, low-sugar bubbly. Dishes include a trio of salmon carpaccio with sea bass, tuna and mackerel sashimi, and tempura cut roll infused by Laurent-Perrier Ultra Brut dressed in caviar. The menu, costing £100 for two people, is available throughout January. Hi Sushi Izakaya, 27 Catherine Street, WC2B 5JS; Koi Sushi, 1e Palace Gate, Kensington, W8 5LS.
