For the super wealthy it pays to divorce in London. This is because divorce judgements handed down in British courts traditionally favour the less wealthy partner.
One case that's currently in the British courts is that of U.K. hedge fund manager Chris Hohn and Jamie Cooper-Hohn. They're tussling over the $1.3 billion estate and $4.3 billion charitable foundation. The decision, which could be out this week, could lead to the U.K.'s biggest ever divorce payout according to a Bloomberg report.
Boris Berezovsky and Galina Besharova
Russian obligarch Boris Berezovsky and ex-wife Galina Besharova settled out-of-court for over £100m in 2011, with some reports putting the actual figure at around £220m.
The couple had obtained a divorce in a court hearing that took place in London in 2010. Their total fortune was unknown but conservative estimates put it at around half a billion pounds.
John and Beverley Charman
London insurance market heavyweight John Charman paid ex-wife Beverley £48 million after a high court judge rejected the tycoon's appeal against the initial ruling. Together the couple's vast fortune had totalled a whopping £131 million.
Phil Collins and Orianne Cevey
Musician Phil Collins settled with former wife Orianne Cevey for £25m in 2008. The singer then told The Mirror in 2010 that three divorces had landed him with a bill of £42 million.
Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills
A high court judge awarded Heather Mills £24.3m in her divorce settlement with Paul McCartney. In the judgement it said that the former Beatle was worth £400m.
