Fifa in Qatar 2022 U-turn
WORLD governing body Fifa insisted yesterday that the 2022 football World Cup in Qatar would not definitely be staged in the winter, just hours after secretary general Jerome Valcke had declared it would switch from its regular summer slot.
Concerns over high temperatures teams would be forced to compete in during the Qatari summer prompted a debate regarding a scheduling change.
And Valcke said yesterday “the World Cup will not be in June-July”, adding that he believed a November start date would be best.
But a Fifa statement later said: “The precise event date is still subject to an ongoing consultation process which involves all main event stakeholders.”
