Fall in number of young people not in work, education or training in the UK flatlines
The number of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) was 1.09m in the three months to June 2013, according to data from the Office for National Statistics.
This was virtually unchanged from the period January to March 2013, but down by 104,000 from the same period the year before.
NEETs accounted for 15.1 per cent of people in the 16 to 24 age group in the period – more or less unchanged from the preceding three month period, but down 1.3 percentage points from a year earlier.
Just over half (53.6 per cent) of all young people in the UK who were NEET were looking for work and available for work and therefore classified as unemployed. The remainder were either not looking for work and/or not available for work and therefore classified as economically inactive.
