Fabio Cannavaro tax evasion case: World Cup winner sentenced to 10 months in prison for swimming in his pool
Despite an ongoing tax evasion case, it wasn’t incomplete tax returns that got Italian footballer Fabio Cannavaro sent to prison. It was a dip in a swimming pool.
The former captain of Italy was banned from entering his property after it was seized by the Italian authorities as part of a tax-evasion investigation. FD Service, a company owned by Cannavaro, is reported to owe €1m (£730,000) in unpaid taxes.
Cannavaro and his wife ignored that ruling and went for a dip in the pool of the world cup-winner’s former residence. Cannavaro was sentenced to 10 months in prison, with his wife and brother also given custodial sentences. They trio appealed and will now be on bail pending the resolution of the case.
FD Service is said to owe corporation tax, VAT, and regional tax, on which it is alleged to have underpaid between 2005 and 2010.
