FA Cup: Bruce aims to pile pressure on Arsenal at Wembley final
HULL CITY 5 SHEFFIELD UNITED 3
HULL CITY boss Steve Bruce believes all the pressure will be on Arsenal in next month’s FA Cup showdown, after his team booked a place in the final for the first time in their history.
City were given an early shock by Sheffield United after goals from Jose Baxter and Stefan Scougall either side a Yannick Sagbo strike gave the League One side a 2-1 lead.
Yet three second-half goals from Matty Fryatt, Tom Huddlestone and Stephen Quinn turned the tables, and a late volley from United’s Jamie Murphy was followed by a David Meyler strike that sealed the win.
“It’s a one-off [occasion], all the pressure is on Arsenal, they haven’t won anything for eight years [sic] – that’s going to be regurgitated I’m sure,” said Bruce, referring to Arsenal’s last trophy, an FA Cup victory nearly nine years ago. The Gunners beat Wigan on penalties on Saturday to make it to the final.
Hull were down within 20 minutes at Wembley yesterday, Baxter jabbing home at the near post. Sagbo stuck away a low cross before half-time, yet the scores were level for barely a minute as Murphy crossed for Scougall to sweep high into the net.
Substitute Fryatt levelled from close range shortly after the break and five minutes later Huddlestone drifted through the United defence and curled a left-footed finish inside the far post. Quinn then scored a stooped header, yet United ensured a dramatic finish when Murphy drilled home from six yards.
As the Sheffield side pushed for an equaliser, Hull hit on the break, Ahmed Elmohamady playing in Meyler who shot across the goalkeeper to secure a return to Wembley on Saturday 17 May.
