Exclusive: Report ranks England among the worst teams left at Euro 2020 – but last-16 opponents Germany have been one of the best
England are one of the worst performing teams left in Euro 2020, according to data analysis shared with City A.M.
Gareth Southgate’s side, who face Germany in the second round on Tuesday, rank 16th out of 24 teams based on performance in the group stage.
England have a lower rating than Turkey, Poland and Slovakia, who have all been eliminated.
And of the teams to have advanced to the last 16, only Wales, Sweden and the Czech Republic have rated worse than England.
The analysis was carried out by City-based Carteret Analytics, using its proprietary quantitative analysis borrowed from investment banking.
It found that Belgium have justified their billing as one of the pre-tournament favourites by being the best team so far.
They are followed by two more sides to have taken maximum points, Italy and the Netherlands.
Spain are a close fourth, perhaps surprisingly given they failed to win their first two matches.
And in an ominous sign for England, Germany have the fifth highest rating despite being held to a draw by Hungary.
Scotland, who drew 0-0 with England in Group D, have been the worst performing team of all.
Ronaldo the highest rated player at Euro 2020
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Cristiano Ronaldo has registered the highest rating of all players at Euro 2020.
Evergreen Portugal forward Ronaldo is the tournament’s leading scorer on five goals, which he has netted from just 11 shots.
The top five includes three Italy players – Marco Verratti, Manuel Locatelli and Ciro Immobile – in a reflection of their strong start.
Kevin De Bruyne has been Belgium’s most influential player and the third highest rated overall.
No England player makes the top 10.
