EU referendum voter registration deadline is today: Here’s everything you need to know about how to register to vote
There isn't much time left to register to vote in the EU referendum – the deadline is rushing towards us faster than the Vote Leave battlebus…
What you need to know about registering to vote in the EU referendum
When is the deadline?
Midnight on 7 June (that's today) is the last time you can register to vote in the EU referendum.
Do I need to register?
If you voted in the local and mayoral elections on 7 May, you're probably already registered. If not, the best way to find out is to register again – it only takes a couple of minutes.
How do I register?
If you live in England, Scotland and Wales, you can register online through the government's gov.uk portal.
The online service is also available in Welsh.
If you live in Northern Ireland, you will need to register using a different form.
You can also apply to vote by post, until at least 11 working days before election day. More info here.
What do I need to register?
You will need your National Insurance number, your date of birth and your address. Your NI should be in your payslip or any official letters about benefits or tax credits.
Students should be able to get their number from their student loan application.
Who can vote?
You have to be a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, aged 18 years or over to vote, though people aged 16 and 17 are able to register.
In addition, you must be resident at an address in the UK or Gibraltar, or a British citizen living abroad who has been registered to vote in the last 15 years – and not be legally excluded from voting.
Can I ask my husband, wife, son or flatmate to register me?
Not any more – but it's easy online.
How will my vote be counted?
Unlike in a General Election, the votes will be counted for the whole of the UK, rather than by constituency.
When is the vote?
Thursday, 23 June. Be there.
