Agents representing players in England have received over £20m from "intermediary commissions", according to data compiled by Fifa's Transfer Matching System (TMS).
Between 1 June – when English clubs were first permitted to transfer players under Fifa rules – and 29 July, the TMS found English clubs spent triple the amount on agents' fees than those in Spain and Germany, while France's total was yet to reach £1m.
Collectively, the "big five" European countries accounted for over 70 per cent of a global £1.1bn spent on transfers this summer, yet England remains "well ahead of any other country in terms of transfer activity and spending", with 188 players signed.
Premier League clubs have so far spent over £500m on new players – £200m more than any of their "big five" rivals.
