England will be different proposition in this World Twenty20, insists skipper Morgan
England skipper Eoin Morgan believes his World Twenty20 squad will prove a more combative proposition than previous incarnations which have suffered ignominious tournament exits.
Morgan will lead his side during their opening Super 10 clash against the West Indies in Mumbai on Wednesday as England bid to initiate a repeat of 2010 when they were crowned World T20 champions.
That tournament remains England’s sole piece of white-ball silverware, while humblings followed at the next two World T20s, which in turn preceded last year’s disastrous group-stage exit at the 50-over World Cup.
“I think this feels different,” said Morgan. “We’ve a different group of players. It’s a new energy.
“It’s an exiting time for English cricket given the talent that we have in our group, and the attitude in taking the game to the opposition. It certainly feels different in that regard.
“We’re a developing side, a young side, and I think the more experience that we gain the smarter the cricket that we’ll play.
“I think in this tournament playing an aggressive brand of cricket and being brave, but playing smart cricket along the way, is part and parcel of it.”
The majority of England’s starting XI looks to be determined although question marks remain over the final seam position which appears to be a battle between Yorkshire duo Liam Plunkett and David Willey.
Plunkett was given the nod in England’s warm-up clash against New Zealand, although Willey returned friendly fire by claiming a hat-trick against his team-mates in a mix-and-match tussle against a Mumbai Cricket Association XI on Monday.
