Brown bully claims resurface
The “bullygate” row that is plaguing Gordon Brown is refusing to die down. Yesterday, The Mail on Sunday released a tape recording of a Brown aide admitting that the Prime Minister pushed him. Dr Stewart Wood, the Prime Minister’s senior foreign policy adviser, told an undercover reporter that he was left “‘shocked and upset” by the incident.
Depressed Blair nearly quit
Tony Blair is said to have become so depressed over the Iraq war that he promised to hand power to Gordon Brown in the summer of 2004, although he eventually changed his mind – a decision that enraged the then chancellor. The allegations are made in Andrew Rawnsley’s explosive book The End of the Party.
Bradshaw in licence fee doubts
Culture secretary Ben Bradshaw yesterday said that he had doubts over the future of the licence fee, arguing there was “good reason” to hold a debate over whether it was “the best funding mechanism in the long term”.
Cameron in immigration row
David Cameron was yesterday forced to distance himself from flyers that said the “floodgates” had opened to immigration. The leaflets, which were distributed by Andrew Rosindell, Cameron’s home affairs spokesman, said that immigration to the UK had caused “a population explosion” and that the UK “simply cannot go on like this”.
