Ebola: Briton with the disease to be flown home
A Briton who contracted the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone is to be flown back to the UK for treatment.
The patient, who is as yet unnamed, is currently on an RAF flight destined for London. Once arrived, he or she will be taken to the Royal Free Hospital in London.
According to reports, the person is not currently seriously unwell.
Although there is as yet no confirmed cure for Ebola, chances of a successful recovery are increased by speedy treatment and access to proper medical facilities.
The case represents the first time a Briton has been confirmed to have the virus.
Although Ebola can have a mortality rate of up to 90 per cent, this outbreak has seen the rate closer to 54 per cent.
Ebola kills few people compared to other diseases. This outbreak has claimed fewer than 2,000 victims, with a World Health Organisation report dated 22 August putting the death toll at 1,427.
Malaria killed an estimated 637,000 people in 2012.
