Early retirement suggested for women facing late pensions
The work and pensions select committee has suggested offering women who were given short notice of the increase in the state pension age the option to retire earlier, with a slightly reduced pension.
The suggestion has been made in a report out today on the introduction of a higher state pension age.
Committee member John Glen MP said: “Lack of adequate notification of state pension age changes demands transitional arrangements, but implemented in an affordable way.
"This report recommends a possible way forward which the government should now explore.”
Experts have recently warned a government review of the state pension age could mean people joining the workforce today will have to wait until their mid-70s before they retire.
Currently, the state pension age is set to be 67 for both men and women by 2028.
