EE reveals 4G signups have overtaken 3G
Mobile operator EE has signed up 3.6m 4G customers and today said sign ups of its 4G plans have overtaken those of 3G plans for the first time.
Chief executive Olaf Swantee marked the occasion by launching a range low cost 4G devices, all named after British birds, that will join its budget £99 Kestrel smartphone to help the network continue to drive its 4G adoption.
The new device range includes the £199 Eagle 4G tablet, the £49 Buzzard in-car 4G wifi hotspot and the Kite and Osprey 4G wifi hotspots.
“We have unique insight into how the technology is changing behaviour. Our mobile devices have effectively become mini TVs with video traffic already making up over half the data on our 4G network,” said Swantee.
Meanwhile rival networks Vodafone and O2 have only announced 637,000 and a million 4G customers respectively.
