Boris Johnson will not run for President as he vows to renounce American citizenship
Boris Johnson has ruled himself out of the running for one top political job – President of the United States.
Johnson was born in New York, making him eligible for the Presidency, and holds dual nationality, but says he will give up his American passport. The London mayor said: “The reason I’m thinking I probably will want to make a change is that my commitment is, and always has been, to Britain. It’s an accident of birth that has left me with this thing.”
The comments, made after a trip to the US, rekindle rumours that he will seek to replace David Cameron as Conservative leader, and ultimately Prime Minister, in the coming years.
Last month Johnson settled a US tax bill that he had previously slammed as unfair.
Johnson published his tax return in 2012 and said he could not “see any particular problem” with top UK politicians doing the same.
