Dour Black Cats are foiled again in dismal stalemate
SHAKY Sunderland extended their recent dismal run to just one league win in 14 matches after sharing a dour goalless draw with Stoke at the Stadium of Light.
Chances were few and far between at either end as Steve Bruce’s men were frustrated by a resilient Potters side.
In fact, it was the visitors who went closest to scoring through former Black Cat Dean Whitehead, but his effort from
Tuncay’s flick-on could only find the arms of Craig Gordon.
Whitehead, however, was lucky to stay on the field after a thunderous challenge on Lee Cattermole just before half-time, but referee Howard Webb only produced a yellow card.
Sunderland had a strong penalty appeal turned down for a handball on Robert Huth, but, in truth, anything more than a share of the spoils would have been unmerited.
Black Cats defender Michael Turner admitted: “It was a scrappy game to be honest and not much fun to play in, but with the run we’re on it’s nice at least to keep a clean sheet.
“A draw is a fair result, Saturday’s game with Wigan is now massive.”
