Domino’s seessales lift due to World Cup
DOMINO’S Pizza yesterday reported a 29 per cent increase in first half pretax profit as sales were boosted by the
World Cup and the company’s sponsorship of ITV hit Britain’s Got Talent.
Domino’s, which operates the British and Irish franchises of the global delivery brand, made a pre-tax profit of £17.5m in the half year to 27 June while sales increased by 21 per cent to £237.1m.
The high profile of Britain’s Got Talent and the impact of the World Cup – with football fans tucking into pizzas while watching games – fuelled the rise.
Domino’s sold 5,000 pizzas in London between 2pm and 5pm (kick-off was 3pm) and 24,000 pizzas in England, up 374 per cent on the same time last year when the national team met Slovenia on 22 June.
Meanwhile, online sales grew by more than 60 per cent in a massive move towards internet ordering.
Chief executive Chris Moore said: “It is easy to try and attribute our success to one thing – be it the weather, or Britain’s Got Talent, or the World Cup – but the underlying trend shows a more compelling picture.”
He added: “We have now been in business for 25 years and those years of experience give us the foundation from which we can seize every opportunity. It is great pizza, delivered as quickly as possible, by dedicated franchisees and store teams, which result in solid and steady sales growth.”
Domino’s, which has 627 stores, is paying an interim dividend of 4.5p per share, up from 3.5p the year before.
