Disney+ subscribers to exceed Netflix by 2027 adding 140m new users
According to new research from Digital TV Research, Disney+ will be the biggest player in the online streaming market, adding 140 million subscribers between 2021 and 2026 to take its total subscription base to to 271 million.
It is predicted that about 102 million, or 38 per cent, of Disney+’ subscribers in 2026 will be in 13 Asian countries under the Hotstar brand.
Five major US-based platforms will control 53 per cent of the world’s 1.7 billion subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) subscriptions by 2026.
This equates to a collective 910 million subscriptions by 2026, up from 585 million in 2021.
Disney+ was launched in November 2019, in the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands, and expanded to Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico a week later.
It became available in select European countries in 2020 and in India through Star India’s Hotstar streaming service, which was rebranded as “Disney+ Hotstar”.
