Discounters grab market share from UK’s leading supermarkets
SAINSBURY’S was the only one of the big four supermarkets to gain market share in the 12 weeks to 13 October as discounters continued to put pressure on Britain’s grocers,
Data from Kantar Worldpanel out yesterday showed Aldi’s sales leapt by 31.7 per cent year-on-year, gaining record market share of 3.8 per cent against three per cent a year earlier. Meanwhile Lidl sales jumped by 13.1 per cent.
Growth at the discount end of the market came at the expense of Tesco, Asda and Morrisons, which all posted sales growth of one per cent or less. Sainsbury’s, along with upmarket grocer Waitrose, were the only grocers to resist pressure from discounters, with sales up 3.7 per cent and 7.6 per cent respectively.
“There is a big squeeze on middle players, with dramatic growth in the discount market but actually also by Waitrose,” Kantar director Edward Garner said.
