Devastated Miller clinging on to cabinet role despite calls to quit
THE PRESSURE continued to mount for culture secretary Maria Miller to resign last night, after fresh calls from senior political figures in Westminster.
In a column in her local newspaper the Basingstoke Gazette this morning, Miller wrote that she is “devastated” and feels she has let her constituents down.
“I have always sought to do the best job that I can in representing the people of Basingstoke in Westminster. I am devastated that this has happened, and that I have let you down,” she wrote, adding: “I can only hope that over time the focus will once again be on Basingstoke.”
The chorus of voices calling for Miller’s resignation swelled yesterday, with former House of Commons speaker Betty Boothroyd admitting to BBC Radio 4 she was surprised Miller had not quit over the weekend.
Earlier in the day Miller’s aide, MP Mary Macleod stepped into the row to defend her boss, telling Sky News there has been a witch hunt.
