De Boer reveals talks to be next Spurs manager
TOTTENHAM have invited Ajax boss Frank de Boer for talks to become their next manager, according to the Dutchman.
Tim Sherwood is expected to be replaced at White Hart Lane in the summer after an indifferent start to life in management since succeeding Andre Villas-Boas in December.
And De Boer, who guided Ajax to a fourth consecutive Eredivisie title at the weekend, revealed he will talk with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy next week.
“They have made their interest clear to Marc Overmars [Ajax director of football] and after the last match [of the Dutch season] on 3 May I will think about this possibility,” said De Boer, capped 112 times by the Netherlands.
“I will have talks and will listen to their offer. After that I will decide on how I feel. I want to add something to a club, build something. I won’t be talking to other clubs until after 3 May.”
Though Ajax remain the only team De Boer has managed, the 43-year-old was Holland assistant manager when the team reached the 2010 World Cup final.
It would seem now though, he is hankering for a new challenge and believes he can replicate at Tottenham the work Brendan Rodgers has done with surprise Premier League leaders Liverpool.
“I see a perspective at Tottenham Hotspur, just as Liverpool and Newcastle United sometimes are, they are sleeping giants,” De Boer added.
“I want to add something to a club, so that people can see that this was the work of Frank de Boer. Liverpool is a great example of that. What Brendan Rodgers is doing now.”
Sherwood signed an 18-month deal with Spurs in December and spoke at the weekend of the frustration in seeing rival managers continually linked to a job he would like to keep.
“Some of these managers are actually touting themselves for my job. I don’t think that’s right,” he said. “It’s something that doesn’t sit well with me.”
