David Beckham pleads with Scotland to vote No to independence to preserve UK’s “historic bond”
David Beckham has become the latest big name to enter the fray over Scottish independence.
In a letter released by the Let's Stay Together campaign the former England captain said he was "thrilled to watch us competing against the world" in the Olympics and expressed his pride in the United Kingdom.
He said:
The achievement that gave me the most pride was to captain and play for my country.
I saw that same pride and passion in every Scottish player and fan whenever we played each other, it was a common bond that I have always related to and admired.
Representing the United Kingdom with our Olympic bid I felt that same pride and passion.
The Let's Stay Together campaign, which has gathered 100,000 signatures has been organised by historian Dan Snow and Tom Holland.
The unionist historical duo have also organised a rally to be held in Trafalgar Square at 6pm tonight. The Let's Stay Together Campaign lined up an impressive list of celebs to back the union including Helena Bonham Carter, Dame Judi Dench, Sting and Eddie Izzard.
However, the Yes campaign is not without star dust boasting the original 007 himself; Sean Connery passionately supporting a yes vote.
Beckham's declaration of support for the union comes days before the final vote with polls still showing it too close to call.
Furthermore, yesterday Britain's biggest celeb Queen Elizabeth the second made a somewhat cryptic intervention. The Queen responded to a question on the referendum, saying: “I hope that people will think very carefully about the future".
