Cycle bridge for Canary Wharf
PLANS for a “Brunel Bridge” to connect Canary Wharf cyclers with central London have come on in leaps and bounds. Cycling charity Sustrans has been awarded £200,000 to look into building a bike bridge from the financial district to Southwark.
Transport for London (TfL) has granted £170,000 to the scheme, matched with £30,000 from local businesses.
The bridge will span 400m from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf’s Westferry area.
Sustrans is a sustainable transport organisation, helping to develop footpaths, cycle lanes and public transport links throughout London and the UK.
The cycle charity say the bridge could halve journey times for cyclists.
Sustrans, which will present its results in August, says the bridge could be finished by 2020, creating a healthy alternative for London commuters.
Isabel Dedring, deputy mayor for transport, said: “More than a third of London’s expected population growth is forecast to happen in East London and we urgently need more crossings.”
