This Creme Egg is an imposter
IT’S OFFICIAL – now the Christmas cards have been relegated to the sales racks, it’s Easter. And Creme Eggs are back on the menu – but not, it seems, as we knew them.
Putting the Kraft into crafty, Cadbury’s US owner has changed the recipe behind our backs. The chocolate is no longer Dairy Milk. There is also one less egg in a box, apparently, but who’s counting? Lots of people. Cue national outrage.
This is by no means the first time this has happened though. Us Brits are forever standing by as our favourite products are tampered with.
Here’s a small list of other foodie atrocities.
1. HP sauce.
In 2011 it emerged Heinz, the US owner (yes, another American insult), had secretly changed the 116 year-old recipe of HP sauce to lower the salt content and keep in line with health regulations. Outrage.
2. Twinings Earl Grey
Also in 2011, English tea stalwart Twinings decided to change its Earl Grey infusion, adding more lemon and bergamot.
Luckily, the ensuing cries from dedicated Earl Grey drinkers meant the company soon reinstated the classic blend.
3. Special K
In 2013 Kellogg’s came under fire for changing everyone’s favourite “healthy” cereal.
Barley was added to the flakes (making them harder) and sugar was baked onto the flakes (making it sweeter). Fans dubbed it Not So Special K.
