Cost of the weekly shop declines as supermarket price war rages on
The cost of the average weekly grocery shop plunged by eight per cent year-on-year in May as fierce competition between the grocers continues to impact the market.
Research by mySupermarket’s Groceries Tracker showed that a basket of 35 staple products across all major grocers cost a total of £86.69 in May, down from £93.87 12 months ago.
Prices fell one per cent, just over £1 on the month, down from £87.70 in April, the independent shopping and price comparison website said.
Broccoli saw the steepest drop in price, falling 29 per cent, with onions and fresh chicken down by six and four per cent respectively.
“This is great news for shoppers, as the savings they are making on their supermarket shop can really add up over a year. With the weekly grocery shop falling a massive eight per cent in the last 12 months, shoppers are saving almost £400,’’ said Gilad Simhony, chief executive of mySupermarket.
Morrisons was cheapest in four categories, Sainsbury’s in one, while Tesco failed to rank at all.
