Conservative areas top house price growth
HOMEOWNERS living in Conservative constituencies have been the biggest beneficiaries of the UK’s house price boom.
Figures released today by online estate agents housesimple.com show that house prices in Tory strongholds have gained 17.1 per cent in the last five years.
The rate of price growth is almost three times that of constituencies with the biggest Labour majorities, where prices have risen just 5.9 per cent since the last General Election.
Conservative-held South Cambridgeshire has been the biggest riser outside London – prices there are 29.7 per cent higher than five years ago.
Meanwhile, almost half the constituencies in London have seen prices climb more than 30 per cent.
Some areas have seen prices decline. Labour-run Bishop Auckland has seen has seen the biggest decline – 8.4 per cent. Tory-run Dewsbury has seen a drop if 2.4 per cent while Labour-run Easlington prices have edged down 1.6 per cent.
“In pure statistical terms, if you vote Tory then you are likely to have fared far better house price-wise over the past five years than you would if you vote Labour or Lib Dem. It’s also clear that the North-South divide is as pronounced regarding house prices as it is politically,” said housesimple.com chief executive Alex Gosling.
